What is American Kenpo?
 

Unlike martial arts that are mainly practised as sport, American Kenpo is designed to help students understand how attacks commonly occur and how to respond with effective, controlled self-defence. It uses strikes, blocks, footwork, body positioning, timing, angles and combinations to build practical skills in a structured and progressive way.

One of the strengths of American Kenpo is that it is principle-based. Students do not simply memorise techniques. They learn how movement works - how to use distance, timing, balance, angles and natural body mechanics. As students progress, they begin to understand not only what to do, but why it works and how techniques can be adapted to different situations.

American Kenpo has a rich and diverse history. Its roots draw from older martial traditions that passed through Okinawa, Japan and Hawaii before developing further in the United States. In Hawaii, Kenpo was influenced by a mixture of martial arts and cultures. Ed Parker, who trained in Hawaii before moving to the American mainland, became the key figure in developing and organising what became known as American Kenpo Karate.

In California, particularly from the 1950s through to the 1970s, Parker continued to refine the system in a diverse martial arts environment. American Kenpo evolved in that “melting pot” setting, drawing on ideas from karate, kung fu, judo, boxing and other fighting systems. Parker brought those influences together into a detailed, organised and practical system of self-defence.

At Brisbane Kenpo Karate, we teach American Kenpo as a martial art for modern students. Training helps develop confidence, self-awareness, respect, discipline, coordination and practical self-defence skills. Students learn in a safe and supportive environment, at a pace suited to their age, experience and ability.

American Kenpo is suitable for children, teenagers and adults. For children, it helps build focus, confidence, coordination and respect. For teens and adults, it provides a practical way to improve fitness, awareness and self-defence skills while training in a structured and positive environment.
